Hair.

“Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair.”

For something that is not even alive, we pay a lot of attention to our hair; we cut it, pile it on top of our heads, let it hang down, plus many other ways to make it something that makes you…well…you.

While taking photos at various photo shoots, I have seen many different styles of hair. Some look really good and others look to be signs of individualism. I have never been a fan of blue, green or multi-colored hair, but it does create an interesting photograph. For quite a while our neighbor’s daughter had blue hair. I guess she was a Marge Simpson fan.

But then there are times when the hair stops growing and the last thing you are going to do is want to make anyone aware of how it has changed so suddenly.

For all of the challenges of quick hair loss, there are organizations that help during these times.

On the newswire today, there was a story of Green Bay Packer linebacker A.J. Hawk and how he will not have hair protruding from his helmet this coming season. He has cut it and is donating it to “Hawks Locks for Kids.” There are many players these days that have very long hair; if they would follow this move, think what it would do for sports and the opinions on professional athletes?

We live in a society that looks up to so many athletes---many of whom go from hero to zero for not wanting to do anything more than play the game and go out and do whatever they feel they have the right to do. It’s not that simple when you are a star and have given up your personal space to be on a field, court, or ice rink.

You are the idol of kids and adults---giving back only multiplies your importance. By the way, one day these athletes will not be at the top of their games---and they will fade---aligning themselves with a good cause is very smart and strategic if nothing else for their egos.

I applaud Mr. Hawk. I think in many respects he used his hair as a symbol of a “Sampson” look---it probably worked. However with short hair, and knowing it went to such an important cause, he is much bigger than who he was just a few days ago. Thank you for setting an example.

The photo above is of one my daughters. Yes she has long hair now, but she has also been known to cut it and give it to “Locks of Love.” She has model-like hair and for anyone on the receiving end who would be “wearing it”; they would feel good when they are so traumatized. I love that she has done this---I love her for more than that of course, but it takes incredible strength to give something that is so important to you and give it to someone who needs it so much.

Thanks for stopping by.
